Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Statistics

Thesis: Modelling HIV Epidemic in India: Transmission and Population Dynamics

My PhD focused on modelling the HIV epidemic in India, with special emphasis on transmission and population dynamics. Using advanced mathematical models, the research examined how HIV spreads among high-risk groups and the general population, and how prevention programmes influence epidemic trends. The study highlighted key drivers of the epidemic and provided evidence for more targeted interventions.

  • New HIV infections in Mumbai declined by over 80% between 2000 and 2010, with the largest reductions among female sex workers (FSWs) and their clients.
  • A shift in transmission dynamics was observed: infections among general women and men increasingly originated from bisexual men and casual partnerships.
  • HIV prevention programmes averted more than 20,000 infections between 2004 and 2012 in the city of Mumbai.
  • STI modeling demonstrated that frequent checkups and higher condom use could substantially reduce sexually transmitted infections and, in turn, HIV transmission among MSM.

The study applied the Asian Epidemic Model (AEM) to estimate and project HIV prevalence and new infections, alongside regression models to analyze risk factors among truck drivers. Differential equation-based models were used to capture HIV transmission across multiple subgroups. Program evaluation combined mathematical modelling with epidemiological data to assess the effectiveness of prevention strategies.

Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in Population Studies

Thesis: Quality of Maternal Health Care and its Impact on Utilization of Services in India
Award: Gold Medal (ranked first in coursework)

My MPhil research examined the quality of maternal health care in India and its impact on service utilization. The study developed composite indices to measure both provision of care (infrastructure, staff, equipment, training) and services delivered (information, actual care, follow-up). The analysis highlighted gaps in service delivery despite availability of infrastructure in several regions.

  • Large variations in quality of maternal health care were observed across districts, with South Indian districts generally ranking higher.
  • Districts in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Haryana showed strong infrastructure and staffing but weaker service delivery.
  • Level of antenatal care was a strong predictor of safe delivery and treatment-seeking for complications; women with high-quality ANC were up to 3–6 times more likely to use maternal health services.
  • Community-level factors (roads, transport, presence of health providers) significantly influenced service utilization, while public sector ANC users were less likely to seek safe delivery compared to private sector users.

The study used data from the Facility Survey (2003) and District Level Household Survey (2002–04), covering 316 districts across 18 states. Composite indices were constructed for provision of care and services delivered, combining multiple weighted indicators. Multilevel logistic regression was applied to assess how maternal, household, community, and district-level factors influenced service utilization.

Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Statistics

Award: Gold Medal (ranked first in coursework)

The course provided in-depth training in advanced applied sampling concepts, research methods and designs, regression models, statistical estimation techniques, and hypothesis testing for statistical significance. As part of the coursework, I conducted a primary data collection study among university students, exploring the influence of Bollywood media on gender stereotypes and socioeconomic perceptions, revealing how exposure to Bollywood content correlates with stronger adherence to traditional gender roles and class-based behaviors.
